Week 8: Nanotech + Art

Nanotech and Nanoscience are topics I had yet to explore and are a rising area in today's time, especially when finding the connections with art. After watching the lectures and the sources I studied, a few topics were of great interest and truly opened my mind to new ideas I have not witnessed.

Nanostructures: Gecko Feet Inspired Adhesive

One concept mentioned in the lecture that influenced my understanding for this week was the technology of gecko inspires adhesive. Biomimicry is an interesting idea for using nature's efficient strategies to solve human-based problems which is what we are seeing in this gecko example. This concept also embeds art, science, and technology very well as it takes expert design, the knowledge of how it is used in nature, and the mechanics to build it so it functions properly.

Nanophotonics: Blue Morpho

Nanophotonic is the combination of the intersection of light with nanostructured particles and the control of the flow of light in this nanoscale. An example is the Blue Morphe which has these nanoscaled structures of a protein that appear to be if they're Christmas trees. When light runs through this nanostructure, what is reflected is a bright blue color. This area of art and nanotechnology can truly bring endless opportunities to being able to change and manipulate colors and make non-toxic pigmentation. Again, this become an applicable concept to solve human-based problems which I find to be a wonderful field to research.
